On 6th March 2019, Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College invited Prof. Shan Wang, Assistant Professor from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Macau to give a lunch seminar entitled “Globalization of Chinese Language”. Prof. Wang began her talk by explaining the definition of language globalization, she said globalization allows languages and their cultures to spread and dominate on a global scale, for example, a globalized language should be used in important international meeting and should have an open, inclusive and flexible system. Then she moved on to talk about the influential power of a language can be determined by six different factors according to George Weber, a renowned Swiss linguist. Prof. Wang pointed out that there is an increase trend of Chinese learners around the globe and this shows Chinese Language is used by more people. Lastly she summarized the problems that globalization of Chinese could face in the near future, such as Chinese writing is hard to learn and memorized for non-native speakers.
