After more than 200 days of calmness, Macau broke its “COVID-free” record on the evening of June 18. The Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre released a statement that they discovered a new community case on June 18. The Macao SAR Government swiftly launched the city-wide nucleic acid program in the morning of June 19 to pinpoint hidden cases. In order to support the Macau SAR Government’s pandemic prevention and control work, MLC teachers and students have actively participated in the voluntary work of the city-wide nucleic acid station under the coordination of the Student Affairs Office (SAO) of the University of Macau.

Gary Ka Wai FUNG – Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Macau last year, I have been participating in the nucleic acid test station volunteer team organized by SAO of UM. This outbreak is more severe and the speed of transmission is faster than before. The atmosphere was quite tense at the nucleic acid test station. Since we have to wear full set of protective gear, it was more physically demanding compared to the previous year. However, it is our responsibility as citizens to stand on the front line to serve our community. Finally, I would like to thank all the front lines workers who are working against the spread of the pandemic.”

LIANG Yiling – With the sudden outbreak of the pandemic, the nucleic acid testing followed one after another. I was fortunate enough to be one of the volunteers. Although I only worked 6 hours, I was really impressed and felt their difficulties: The hot weather, tightly wrapped protective clothing, a steady stream of people and sweat soaked the clothes. Despite this, all the volunteers still sticked to their posts and greeted the citizens with the best attitude. While admiring them, I become more grateful to the front-line staff. They carry a heavy burden for us, in exchange for a peaceful life. And it is their dedication that will help Macau successfully weather the storm. Finally, I hope this pandemic will end soon, and I sincerely wish everyone good health and safety.

CHONG Sio Un – After participating in the fifth round of nucleic acid testing volunteer activity, I understand more about the efforts of frontline staff and volunteers. I was mainly responsible for directing the flow of people at the gate of the nucleic acid station and reminding people to show their health code and identification documents. I was drenched in sweat after half an hour standing outside the station, but I also learned a lot in the process. We hope everyone can respect the front-line personnel and try to follow instructions. As long as we work hard, Macau will surely overcome the epidemic as soon as possible.

CHAN Sin Ieng – I am very glad to be a volunteer at Seac Pai Van Public School this time. It was a new breakthrough and challenge for me because it was my first time to support the Macau government as a volunteer, to fight against the epidemic and to contribute to the society. In this work, I was responsible for managing the orderly flow of people. Since we were working in a caring station, there were many elderly or disabled people who need extra assistance, but Macau residents still kept order and made the whole process of nucleic acid testing flow smoothly, which really made me feel comforted. I hope Macau will overcome the epidemic soon.

It was a new breakthrough and challenge for me because it was my first time to support the Macau government as a volunteer, to fight against the epidemic and to contribute to the society. In this work, I was responsible for managing the orderly flow of people. Since we were working in a caring station, there were many elderly or disabled people who were slow to move around, but Macau residents still kept order and made the whole process of nucleic acid testing flow smoothly, which really made me feel comforted. I hope Macau will overcome the epidemic soon.

LEI Leong Wang – As a teenager in Macau, I am always thinking of what I can do for my country, therefore this time, during the outbreak of coronavirus, I decided to jump out of my comfort zone and participate 2 times in the voluntary work of the mass nucleic test. Despite facing various challenges like working in a hot weather, I believe that what we are doing is worth it. Even though being a volunteer may gain no rewards, however I think that the word ‘thank you’ from many Macau citizens is already the biggest reward for us. Moreover, I have gained a lot of experience in the voluntary work which is important for me in the future workplace. I believe that if we, teenagers, are willing to pay our effort in the voluntary work in our community, we can make this small city a better place to live.

ZHANG Xingjian – The sudden pandemic has put everyone’s life on hold. The scale and scope of this outbreak was unexpected for everyone. I am very happy to do volunteer work at Centro Medico Son Vo this time. My task is to guide the crowd at exits and entrances. Even though it was night, I was drenched in sweat. But it is worth it to contribute to the end of the pandemic. Seeing young people, old people, and children, even if it was almost 12:00 in the night, all actively cooperated to do the nucleic acid, a warm current flowed in my heart – if everyone works together, we will be able to overcome the difficulties.
