On 24 March 2025, acclaimed fashion designer Ms. Victoria Kuan, Director General of Macau Productivity and Technology Transfer Center, delivered an inspiring and insightful talk on Monday at Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College (MLC), titled “Macau Fashion: Where East Meets West in Style” in MLC’s Grand Beauty Forum. The event drew students eager to hear from one of Macau’s rising creative voices about the intersection of culture and couture.
Ms. Kuan, known for blending Chinese and Portuguese influences in her designs, spoke passionately about how growing up in Macau gave her a unique cultural lens that has shaped her creative identity. “Designing with both East and West in mind wasn’t something I had to think about—it was instinctive,” she shared. “Macau’s streets, traditions, and daily life naturally carry that fusion. I didn’t even realize how unique it was until I started studying fashion abroad.” She recounted her beginnings as a teenage amateur, experimenting with fashion long before her formal education in design in the UK. That early start, rooted in Macau’s multicultural environment, laid the foundation for her future work as a professional designer.
Beyond design, Ms. Kuan share her experience working up the ladder from a manager in the Fashion Design Department to the head of the Center. She gave an empowering message to students, encouraging them to pursue their passions with commitment and courage. “It’s not just about talent—it’s about how much you’re willing to work for your dream,” she said. “Don’t be afraid to start small. Just start.”
The talk ended with a Q&A session, where students eagerly asked about her creative process, challenges in the fashion industry, and advice for aspiring artists. Victoria Kuan’s visit to MLC left students feeling both connected to their local roots and inspired to think globally—an embodiment of the very spirit she brings to her designs.
