Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College, and co-organizer Moon Chun Memorial College, organized Introduction to Mindfulness, a three-week course between October and November 2022. The course is conducted by Prof. Katherine Chen, director of English Learning Centre and Associate Professor of the Department of English. The course practices Healthy Lifestyle ——students learn and practice mindfulness techniques by sensing one’s body, emotions, and thoughts. Prof. Chen teaches three major points: First is how to pay attention to our present-moment experience. Second is to understand the different modes of being and knowing, and the ability to choose which mode is best suited to which situations. And finally, responding rather than reacting. Prof. Chen reminds students the importance to learn to react less and respond more. Mindfulness improves cognitive performance too.
This course attracted participants from various colleges and provided much opportunity for interactions. In the sessions, participants enthusiastically shared their experience in the improvements in thoughts and emotions as they practice mindfulness. After the final session, students expressed their gratitude to Prof. Chen for teaching them such intellectual yet practical topic which they believe is beneficial lifelong.
