In the afternoon of September 25, 2024, the Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College’s Aesthetic Education Hall hosted a lecture on “Men, Women, and the Spirit of Community” as part of the Great Beauty Forum. Renowned scholars from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, Professor Li Chenyang and Professor Xiao Hong, provided insightful interpretations from the perspectives of philosophy and sociology, respectively. The lecture was chaired by Master Yang Liu, with Associate Master Gary and over fifty college fellows and students in attendance.
Master Yang first introduced the academic backgrounds of the two professors, including their education and teaching experience at universities such as Peking University, the University of Connecticut, and Nanyang Technological University. This introduction showcased the profound academic foundation, outstanding scholarly achievements, and rich life experiences of the two professors.
Professor Li Chenyang began with the concepts of utilitarian ethics, deontological ethics, and care ethics, focusing on key issues of ethics and gender equality. Using Lawrence Kohlberg’s Heinz Dilemma experiment on “saving the wife at the pharmacy,” he illustrated the moral gender differences where men tend to favor abstract principles and women tend to favor concrete care. At the same time, he pointed out the similarities between Western care ethics and Confucian ethics in terms of human relationships, family concepts, and the idea of “benevolence,” but emphasized that Western and Chinese ethics cannot be simply equated. This showcased the beauty of Chinese and Western philosophy and comparative philosophy.
Professor Xiao Hong continued the discussion on care ethics, analyzing the relationship between care and gender studies from a sociological perspective. Based on empirical research data on care ethics, Professor Xiao pointed out that women play the role of maintaining intimate relationships and providing emotional support in families and communities, serving as the core of social cohesion and group solidarity. In contrast, men exhibit qualities such as bravery and crisis management skills. Professor Xiao’s views provoked deep reflection on the current gender structure and division of labor in society. She eloquently explained the importance of a harmonious society, showcasing the beauty of gender studies.
The discussion session followed, with enthusiastic participation from the attending faculty and students. They engaged in in-depth discussions on the definition of philosophical concepts and gender issues from different disciplinary perspectives, agreeing that eliminating gender bias, promoting human liberation, and achieving gender equality depend on social consensus and progress. Master Yang shared her experiences of facing the pandemic crisis, taking responsibility, and breaking out of female stereotypes, which inspired the male and female students present to take on responsibilities and strive to be pioneers of the new era. Finally, Master Yang presented certificates of appreciation to Professors Li and Xiao, and everyone took a group photo to commemorate the occasion.
This academic lecture presented a wide array of scholarly perspectives, benefiting faculty and students by enhancing their understanding of academic diversity, gender differences, and cultural diversity. It also highlighted the importance of mutual support and joint growth between men and women. Only by eliminating biases and engaging in continuous reflection can we create a more harmonious, caring, and cooperative community!
