Recently, Dr. Fan Xin, a distinguished historian specializing in twentieth-century China and currently serving as Director of Studies at Lucy Cavendish College, University of Cambridge, visited Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College (MLC) at the University of Macau.

During this visit, Dr. Fan passionately introduced the Cambridge collegiate system and its academic and social life, sharing insights into the essence of “Cambridge Culture.” He emphasized the inclusive and supportive community at Lucy Cavendish College, highlighting its commitment to fostering academic excellence and personal growth. Dr. Fan discussed various initiatives designed to create a welcoming environment for students from diverse backgrounds, reflecting on how such an atmosphere contributes to a rich and engaging educational experience. He praised Cambridge’s unique management model that integrates colleges and departments, allowing both students and faculty to gain profound experiences.

MLC College Master Prof. Yang Liu highly praised Cambridge for its advanced educational model, rich resources, and beautiful natural environment. She introduced the unique features of the University of Macau’s collegiate system, emphasizing the concept of “whole-person education.” This approach fosters seven competencies, including Responsible Citizenship, Global Competitiveness, Knowledge Integration, Teamwork and Collaboration, Service and Leadership, Culture Engagement, and Healthy Lifestyle. MLC promotes student growth through experiential learning, communal dining education, college courses, academic support, and care services. Master Yang also highlighted the “Academy of Aesthetic Education” established by the College, the multilingual and diverse ethos, and the values of great love, grand beauty, and truth. She showcased its practical experiences and outstanding achievements in cultivating students’ overall character, academic progress, and cultural innovation.

Dr. Fan expressed genuine appreciation for MLC’s educational philosophy and rich activities, particularly how they enhance students’ abilities to integrate knowledge across disciplines and engage in cultural innovation. He also praised the beautiful natural environment, unique collegiate system, and profound humanistic spirit at the University of Macau, expressing hopes for further collaboration in the future.

During the subsequent discussion, MLC faculty and students engaged in in-depth exchanges on student development, psychological counseling, willpower cultivation, success stories, and international collaboration. Students appreciated Dr. Fan’s insights, noting that their talks provided valuable perspectives on the collegiate system. This cross-cultural educational exchange not only facilitated dialogues between Chinese and British higher education institutions but also sparked interest among attendees in exploring international academic opportunities and understanding different educational models.

At the conclusion of the event, Master Yang invited Dr. Fan to tour the college and its recent art exhibition. She presented Dr. Fan with a renowned collection of traditional Chinese paintings by Professor Zhang Yan, a senior fellow of MLC. This gift symbolizes the friendship between the University of Macau and the University of Cambridge, as well as MLC’s commitment to preserving the traditions of Chinese art. The Lingnan School of Painting has now found its way into the beautiful city of Cambridge, where Eastern and Western aesthetics blend harmoniously. Cultural exchange truly is a marvelous thing!
