Prof. Chen Qingrong

In the series UM Mental Health Awareness Month, Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College (MLC) invited Prof. Chen Qingrong, Dean of the School of Psychology of Nanjing Normal University, to give a lecture entitled Su Shi’s Poetic Dwelling: Positive Psychology and Resilience. Prof. Chen, a distinguished psychologist, his lectures take the poetic life of Su Shi and other famous writers as an example, and deeply explore how ones can adopt positive psychological attitudes and resistance.

The lecture was hosted by Associate Master, Dr. Ka Wai Fung and College Master, Prof. YANG Liu gave a warm introduction to Prof. Chen’s academic achievements. In the lecture, Prof. Chen first introduced the life and poetry of Su Shi and Liu Yuxi, the fact that both of them had accomplished careers at young age but had experienced many belittlements throughout their lives, which led to the fact that in modern society, people often face the pressure or difficulties from different aspects in lives, such as work pressure and interpersonal problems. He stressed the importance of cultivating a positive mindset and optimism through telling the stories of both poets. In order to better cope with daily challenges and improve the quality of life. Prof. Chen also shared the practicality of sleep for psychological adjustment. In addition, he stressed the importance of students expressing their emotions appropriately, and suggested that students should actively seek support and communication to share their psychological experiences with others.

The UM Mental Health Awareness Month series is carefully planned and organized by the Student Affairs Office. In October, MLC will also organise other mental health activities to help students face challenges and stress and promote physical and mental health development.
